WEEK 7 · 3 HOURS
Deep Inference and Author Assumptions
Focus: Advanced inference · assumptions
Infer unstated assumptions, implications and logical consequences from academic texts.
Hour 1Input & inference
Hour 2Strategy & interaction
Hour 3Simulation & reflection
HOUR 1 · Input & Strategic Comprehension 60 MIN
Build comprehension before answering under test pressure.
1A · Academic Vocabulary
assumption
suposición
An assumption is treated as accepted without full proof.
implication
implicación
An implication follows indirectly from the text.
infer
inferir
Build meaning from evidence.
underlying
subyacente
An underlying idea may not be explicit.
premise
premisa
A premise supports reasoning.
consequence
consecuencia
Infer what logically follows.
nuance
matiz
Nuance prevents oversimplification.
interpret
interpretar
Interpret using multiple clues.
1B · Visual Strategy
Deep inference connects multiple clues
A deep inference often requires more than one sentence. Identify repeated ideas, contrast, tone and what the author treats as already accepted. Then build the most supported interpretation.
Example 1
Deep inference connects multiple clues.
Example 2
Assumptions support arguments without always being explicit.
Example 3
The best inference is the one most strongly supported by the whole passage.
1C · Inferential Listening
Question: What underlying assumption supports the argument?
An author may argue that schools should teach critical thinking because students face increasing amounts of online information. The underlying assumption is that students cannot evaluate all information effectively without explicit practice. This assumption is not necessarily written as a direct statement, but it supports the argument.

HOUR 2 · Strategy & Academic Interaction 60 MIN
Apply the strategy through dialogue, classification and justification.
2A · Guided Dialogues
Dialogue 1
Sara: I cannot find the answer in one sentence.
Mateo: Maybe the question requires combining clues.
Dialogue 2
Teacher: What does the author assume about students?
Student: That evaluating online information requires explicit training.
Dialogue 3
Laura: Could another interpretation be possible?
Daniel: Yes, but we choose the one best supported by the text.
2B · Interactive Practice
